Calderona is a fig variety found growing in Pons' collection in Spain. It's highly regarded among many fig growers for its flavor, which is detailed in Monserrat Pons' book, "Fig Trees of the Balearic Islands."

Calderona has a syrupy, berry-like flavor, reminiscent of Black Madeira. The texture is meaty with a good crunch due to the abundance of seeds, and the skin is not as thick as Black Madeira's.

Calderona is shaped like a caldron, hence the name. Calderona also has a longer stem, which may contribute to less splitting compared to Black Madeira and Italian 258, varieties known for their splitting issues due to short stems and sensitive fig eyes.

The Calderona fig hangs downwards on the tree, which, on average, makes it more resistant to splitting in the rain, a common issue with fig varieties whose fruits point upwards. Its neck appears more pliable than Black Madeira, and the skin is not as tough, also suggesting better rain resistance.
