The Anconetana fig comes from the city of Ancona in Italy. "Ancona" refers to the city itself, while "Anconetana" is the adjective describing something related to the city, region, or its inhabitants.

It's now become a true Italian-American Philly heirloom fig.

This is the variety shown in the Fig Boss documentary. You can see it in Philadelphia as I talk to John, a longtime fig grower who sold his figs from this tree at Reading Terminal Market.

John's daughter, Vera, also has a large tree established in South Philly, less than a block away.

As for the fig variety itself, it's close to an Adriatic type, but with some differences. I'm excited to explore those differences in 2025.

John said this variety doesn't split or spoil, and it produces one crop of figs. He also noted that it's hardy, but not as hardy as some other varieties.

My friend Rafael near Miami raves about it. In his greenhouse, Anconetana produces figs of incredible quality.
