The variety appeared in John Verdick’s Figs for Fun database as “Camuna Small Black." However, his database states that, "Cuttings came from Italy and may have been mislabeled, as it clearly is not a dark fig."

Around 2014, Bill, a good friend of mine, purchased cuttings from MJ Willis on eBay, intrigued by Verdick’s note of its quality despite the naming error. Bill shared it with others, including another friend of ours, Steve, in Maryland.

Wondering more about this variety, Steve linked the name “Camuna” to Val Camonica. 3 fig varieties mentioned in Gene Hosey's orchard map, which listed three Val Camonica figs: Large Black, Small Black, and Long Green.

It stated:

Original name unknown; originates in Val Camonica, a valley in the lower Alpine regions of Lombardy, Italy.

Sergio Carlini, an Italian grower, confirmed the variety’s origin in Val Camonica but provided limited additional details. We also identified it as the Long Green variety from Gene Hosey’s orchard map.

My personal time in the region in 2023 helped me understand how similar the area's climate is to that of the Northeastern US. Time spent growing in an area with cold winters and rainy falls could prove positive for the variety's traits.

Finally, here are Val Camonica Long Green's traits:

Bill has been raving about this variety to me for quite some time. Telling me that it dries on the tree very easily, tastes great when dried, and has proven to have excellent rain resistance.

I found all of that to be true and more:

It's very hardy, early, will produce a light breba crop, and is a dwarf variety, producing wood of a much smaller diameter with tighter node spacing.

It's a great introduction that was almost lost if not for Bill. I highly recommend trying this variety. It will perform well even in the most challenging climates.
