Don't be confused, Salam Piacentino is the correct name for this variety. Somewhere along the way, the correct name was mixed up, and it was referred to as Fico Salame or Salami. This variety originates from Pomona Gardens in Italy.

Here's Paolo's description:

"A fig shaped like a Piacenza salami. The figs are truncated near the ostiole. The fruits camouflage themselves with the leaves, making them difficult to find."

I have found this variety to be a bigger version of Verdolino with a longer neck and shorter stem. Comparing them side by side, they have the same flavor profile, but Salam is noticeably larger with a different shape and an entirely different leaf pattern. Both, I consider to be excellent choices for humid climates. Their elongated shape is exactly what growers in these areas should look for. From the outside, it’s essentially a shorter-stemmed, green-skinned Moro de Caneva—eerily similar.

As for the other growing descriptors, Salam produces a tasty and plentiful breba crop, is hardy, and ripens early. It checks all of the boxes, making it suited for just about any climate.
