Similar to the variety Niwot, Ohio's Treasure will produce fruit on primocanes. They're among the very few everbearing black raspberry varieties available. Usually, black raspberries fruit once in the summer only on floricanes, but after seeing its everbearing habit firsthand, I was shocked at how it continued to produce fruit even after our first frost. The eating experience also rivals other tasty varieties like Bristol and Jewel.

Yes, you read that right. Raspberries come in a wide palette of colors—including red, purple, yellow, and even pink—and black raspberries are often the top choice for those seeking the most intense raspberry flavor imaginable. They are my personal favorite, specifically because they pack a deeper, richer punch than their red or yellow cousins.

Black Raspberries are remarkably easy to grow and stay very productive even in shadier conditions. Ohio's Treasure can fruit on both the first-year primocanes in the fall and the second-year floricanes in the summer. To prune them, you simply cut back the canes that have finished their two-year cycle and "tip" the new growth to encourage the lateral branches where the fruit forms.

Black raspberries, unfortunately, have sharper thorns and need to be staked or trellised. One plant can easily multiple into many, but if kept under control, one plant will take up a 5 ft wide by 3 ft tall area.
